Due to the WESTEST Field Test, each class period was handled differently, but all did each of the following through the week.

Day 1:

EQ:  How do I solve addition and subtraction equations?

BR:  Write an algebraic expression for each verbal model.

  1. a number x decreased by 9
  2. 5 times the sum of p and 6
  3. 2 plus the product of 8 and n
  4. the quotient of 4 and a number c

Agenda:

  1. Discuss BR.
  2. Discuss the difference between an expression and an equation.
  3. Discuss the words solve, solution, inverse operation, and isolate the variable.
  4. Discuss the Addition and Subtraction Properties of Equality.
  5. Solving addition and subtraction equations by using inverse operations.
  6. Discuss using equations to solve word problems.

Assignment:
Teacher created worksheet

Day 2:

EQ:  How do I solve multiplication and division equations?

BR:  Solve.

  1. y + 13 = 14
  2. y – 7 = 3
  3. h + 4 = 17
  4. f – 5 = 8

Agenda:

  1. Discuss BR
  2. Discuss the Multiplication and Division Properties of Equality.
  3. Solving multiplication and division equations by using inverse operations.
  4. Word problems using division and multiplication equations.

Assignment:
Teacher created worksheet

Days 3 and 4:

EQ: How do I solve multi-step equations?

Day 3:
BR: Solve for the given variable.

  1. 4x = 16
  2. t/6 = 5
  3. 3y = 27
  4. w/9 = 3

Day 4:
BR: Solve for the given variable.

  1. 5x = 35
  2. t + 7 = 21
  3. x/13 = 3
  4. -2 – r = 12

Lesson:

  1. Discuss BR.
  2. Solving multi-step equations.
  3. Problem Solving Application (Using UPSL to solve word problems).
