EQ: How do I find a percent?

Tuesday:

    1. What percent of 162 is 90?
    2. What percent of 220 is 88?
    3. Earth has a surface area of approximately 197 million square miles. About 58 million square miles of that surface area is land. Find the percent of Earth’s surface that is land.
    4. Eddie weighs 160 pounds, and his bones weigh 24 pounds. Find the percent of his weight that his bones are.
  3. Discuss finding the percent of a number.
    1. A domestic pig can run about clip_image006% of the speed of a giraffe. A giraffe can run about 32 miles per hour. To the nearest tenth, how fast can a domestic pig run?
    2. The Chrysler Building in New York City is about 1046 feet tall. The height of the Empire State Building is approximately 120% of the height of the Chrysler Building. To the nearest foot, find the height of the Empire State Building.
    3. After a drought, a reservoir had only about clip_image008% of the average amount of water. If the average amount of water is 57,000,000 gallons, how much water was in the reservoir after the drought?
    4. Ms. Chang deposited $550 in the bank. Four years later her account held 110% of the original amount. How much money did Ms. Chang have in the bank at the end of the four years?
  4. Discuss finding a number when the percent is known.
    1. 36 is 4% of what number?
    2. 60 is 12% of what number?
    3. In a science lab, a sample of a compound contains 16.5 grams of sodium. If 82.5% of the sample is sodium, find the number of grams the entire sample weighs.
    4. The Pacific giant squid can grow to a weight of 2000 pounds. This is 1250% of the maximum weight of the Pacific giant octopus. To the nearest pound, find the maximum weight of the octopus.
    5. The king cobra, the world’s largest venomous snake, can reach a length of 18 feet. This is only about 60% of the length of the largest reticulated python. Find the length of the largest reticulated python.
